Poverty Elimination and Economic Enhancement

By coming together to help families address financial challenges, we can stop the cycle of poverty and bring generational change.

Did you know, 12% of Ismaili families in Canada live in poverty?

The Diamond Jubilee Fund provides vital funding for programs that build confidence, resiliency and self-sufficiency for those in need in our Jamat. Many individuals in our Jamat receive crisis support from highly qualified social services professionals. A wide range of individuals in our Jamat also receive employment support. These programs have already changed thousands of lives, and will change many more.

Your contribution to the Diamond Jubilee Fund makes a difference by:

  • Employing 11 full-time social services professionals.
  • These professionals help individuals and families in our Jamat who are in crisis situations. Counselling is provided with special care and compassion for each individual’s unique needs. Counsellors also help to secure resources both within and outside our Jamat for the best possible outcomes.
  • Assisting the Social Support Services (SSS) phone line.
  • In 2016, over 500 individuals accessed SSS for support
  • Finding and securing employment.
  • In 2016, over 400 individuals in our Jamat received the help of paid skilled and employment professionals.
  • Helping raise families in our Jamat who earn less than $40,000 per year out of poverty.
  • In 2016-2017, 50 participants were enrolled in vocational training programs. These types of training programs enable Jamati members to develop skills that lead to well-paying jobs, and personal and professional autonomy and growth.

Strengthening Youth Identity

The Diamond Jubilee Fund supports programs and services that help build strength and confidence in the Ismaili identity of our youth. Examples of such programs include:

  • Horizons al-Ummah, Discovery and Global Encounters
  • Anti-bullying programs
  • Mentorship programs
  • Leadership programs
  • Arts and culture programs such as bands and choirs
  • Sports leagues and other sporting activities

Programs that bring Ismaili youth together facilitate friendships and bonds that last a lifetime, all within the context of our faith.

Your contribution to the Diamond Jubilee Fund makes a difference:

  • 1 in 5 youth who attended Horizons al-Ummah and Global Encounters camps received funding last year. Without it, they would not have been able to experience this formative development opportunity.
  • Positive Youth Development initiatives, as laid out by the asset model from the Search Institute, provide opportunities for Ismaili youth in Canada to enhance their interests, skills, and abilities.

Education and Early Childhood Development

A bright future for the youngest in our Jamat begins with a strong foundation and a head start in life.

The Diamond Jubilee Fund supports parents and young children with early childhood education programs such as music classes and parenting skills workshops. Homework help and tutorial support is also provided to elementary and high school students across the country.

Whether supporting parents or providing education support, the Diamond Jubilee Fund will ensure that every child has a chance to achieve their aspirations and reach their full potential. Knowing that our children are set up for success gives us confidence that our Jamat’s best is yet to come.

Your contribution to the Diamond Jubilee Fund makes a difference in the development of the youngest members in our Jamat:

  • There are 3 Early Childhood Development centres operating in Quebec with 41 students showing above average work
  • 800 children participate in the Mini-School program in Quebec
  • Across Canada, there were 1100 participants in the Birth-to-Three program in 2016/2017

Building Community

Our collective identity as Ismaili Canadians unites us as a tight-knit and strong community. It’s also important to build bridges and understanding with wider Canadian society.

To this end, the Diamond Jubilee Fund will support programming such as tours, activities within the larger ummah, and relationship-building with municipal, provincial and federal institutions.

Understanding our Identity, Faith and Culture

Understanding our faith and knowing who we are, and that we belong to a strong and supportive community, can make all the difference.

There are 46 Bait-ul-Ilm centres across Canada committed to teaching Jamati youth about our faith, traditions and values. The Bait-ul Ilm program provides a religious foundation and strengthened sense of community for our children and grandchildren.

The Diamond Jubilee Fund will continue to support Bait-ul Ilm classes by providing classroom supplies and materials, professional development for teachers, refreshments and regional transportation requirements.

The Diamond Jubilee Fund also provides young professionals, adults and seniors with the opportunity to deepen our understanding of our faith, through religious seminars and education materials. Additionally, the Fund supports waezeen training programs.

Your contribution to the Diamond Jubilee Fund makes a difference:

  • In 2016-2017, over 7,000 students from pre-primary to Grade 12 attended Bait-ul Ilm classes
  • A total of 655 volunteer instructors and 50 STEP educators offered their time to teach and inspire our children about our faith
  • Teachers received 10 to 15 hours of professional development training on the Ta’lim curriculum and teaching pedagogy
